Our story
Why Gyaanka Was Founded
Across India, and among Indian families settled across continents, countless significant lives remain undocumented: parents who quietly built lasting businesses, teachers who shaped generations of students, physicians who served communities without recognition, artists who enriched the culture around them, entrepreneurs who created livelihoods for hundreds, villages whose histories shaped a region's identity.
Most such lives leave behind photographs. Some leave behind wealth. Precious few leave behind a professionally preserved account of who they truly were, and why their life mattered.
Gyaanka was founded to change that for families in India, and equally for the global Indian diaspora who often feel this absence most acutely, separated as they are by geography from the elders whose stories they wish never to lose.

Our research and interview process is conducted comfortably over video conversations from wherever your family now resides; and for documentary biographies, a Gyaanka filmmaker will happily travel to be with your subject, whether that means a fortnight in Mumbai, or accompanying them across the cities of London, Toronto, Nairobi or New Jersey that now hold their story.
Written manuscripts are delivered digitally to families anywhere in the world, ensuring that geography is never the reason a legacy goes unpreserved.
The founder
A Creator of Words and Stories
Sanjay V. Shah is, first and foremost, a creator of words and stories. For 31 years he has worked as a journalist, author, playwright, lyricist and screenwriter, writing with equal fluency in Gujarati, English, Hindi, and with a noteworthy command of Marathi. His published and produced work includes 10+ books, 30+ stage plays in Gujarati and Hindi, the dialogues of a Hindi film, and several widely watched Hindi and Gujarati television serials. Across these forms he has personally written more than 50 million creative words, the equivalent of 1,000 average-length books. Across a career profiling more than 1,000 well-known individuals across every field of public life, his work has been received with acceptance and satisfaction in excess of 95 per cent, a consistency he attributes not to instinct alone, but to disciplined listening.
This sustained creative practice is matched by organisational discipline of unusual scale. As founder and CEO of Mangrol Multimedia Limited, Sanjay has built a company that delivers content in more than 40 Indian and international languages for clients across India and abroad. He has assembled and continues to lead a network of experienced authors, researchers, filmmakers, directors, designers and technicians, professionals capable of handling complex, high-stakes commissions with precision and consistency. Through this organisation another 60 million words have been created and delivered to the same exacting standard.
Beyond original writing, Sanjay's understanding of language extends into content transformation. He regards localisation not as mechanical conversion but as the careful transfer of power, cadence and meaning from one tongue to another, a discipline he considers essential in a globalised world.
It is his lifelong engagement with language and history that gave rise to Gyaanka. From adolescence he has asked why so many Indian lives of consequence remain undocumented in the languages and idioms that shaped them. Gyaanka is the answer to that question: an institution dedicated to preserving individual, family, institutional and community legacies through rigorously researched biographies, documentary films and lasting archives.
Sanjay's leadership is the spinal cord of Gyaanka. He possesses an uncommon ability to sense the true pulse of a project and then assemble the precise constellation of talent required to realise it. Clients who entrust their stories to Gyaanka place them in the hands of a professional organisation that treats every assignment as history worth cherishing, both by those who own it and by those who will one day refer to it.
